QUITE FRANKLY’S FAVOURITE VIDEOS OF 2016

As we usher in a new year, we reflect on our favourite short-form videos of 2016. Short films, title sequences, extreme sports, promos, animations and one manic cat. Not all are from 2016, but if it made an impression on us this year, then we’ve let it through! Enjoy!

Jez

‘HUGO BOSS | The SkyWalk’ produced by Wing

“Just because I know how hard it was to shoot and how many different versions of the edit there were!”

Alex

‘Curmudgeons’

“A pair of senior citizens have a relationship that shocks both their families in this potty-mouthed, but endearing, comedy.”

Ben E

‘#TrumpFacts’

“I am a big fan of Cub Studio’s work this summer with #TrumpFacts  They’re just brilliant little bites of humour and really nice animations too!”

Lora

BBC Rio Olympics 2016′

“I’m going to go for the BBC’s promo for the Rio 2016 Olympics… Somehow I didn’t like it at first – perhaps I didn’t like that they’d gone for animation when Rio has the most incredible natural beauty. But the more I watched it, the more I liked it – the animation is superb; it’s a very clever idea, it has a great music track and Rio 2016 held a special place for me this year. So it has to be this!”

Ben P

‘Black Swell’

“A really fascinating and dark look into the immediacy of the effects of human interaction. Richard Kind is fantastic as a school teacher grappling with his inner demons. It is a piece that really shows how far it can go to give someone just a bit of your time and an ear to listen.

Sitara

Title Sequence for HBO’s ‘The Night Of’

“Its an 8 part mini-series about a fictional crime and murder case. It’s based in NYC and they have a stunning intro sequence that’s a combination of aerial videography of the city, other dark “elements” and images that are part of the show. It’s monochromatic and sort of depicts the cityscape in a new light.”

Bobby

Kaleidoscope – ‘See Things Differently’

“If MC Esher made BMX videos it’d be something like this. They use forced perspective in a similar way to the famous C4 idents. The soundtrack. The camerawork. The set design. All of it makes me go, “Oo!”.”

Lies

H&M’s ‘Come Together’

“In the spirit of Christmas and because everyone likes Wes Anderson.”

Sam

‘Borrowed Time’

“My favourite video of the year was featured in Vimeo staff picks a few months ago, only to have been removed from the site entirely a few weeks later. I’m guessing this is because it recently got shortlisted for the Oscars, so perhaps that says as much about this short as I ever could… This animation blew me away; this is just the teaser but I encourage everyone to keep an eye out for this stunning example of the quality of today’s animations. Oh, did I mention the writer and director of Borrowed Time met while working for Pixar… So there’s that.”

Lucy

‘Narcos’ Title Sequence

“My favourite is the title sequence from Narcos. For so many reasons – the use of archive footage, the effects, the graphics, the music. Even if I hadn’t totally loved the entire series, I would still be saying I loved the title sequence!”

Andy

‘Best of Wingsuit Proximity Flying 2016’

“Spectacular shots of an exhilarating sport that’s hard to film!”

Claire

‘Pinky the Cat’

“The footage of this timeless viral video popped up in higher definition this year. It’s a lighthearted clip which reduced us all into fits of laughter this year!”
