PYEONGCHANG WINTER OLYMPICS 2018
Even though PyeongChang was my sixth Olympic Games, it’s still such a privilege to be able to see the world’s biggest sporting event up close…

Working with Omega has always felt like family but as content has evolved for ever faster delivery, so has the number of our outputs at the Games. Omega’s role as Official Timekeeper puts them in a unique position in comparison to other top sponsors. Their equipment, technology and know-how are the start and finish of every Olympic sport and everything in between. Now data transponders attached discretely to athletes boots, ankles or shirts can track and transmit pretty much any kind of kinetic data, for instant consumption by audiences around the world. For us, it means filming up close in the most incredible locations and those are not without challenges.

This time we filmed Big Air, Short Track, Ice Hockey, Alpine skiing, Cross-Country and Half-Pipe and I was really impressed by the new sports aimed at attracting a younger TV audience. What these athletes can do defies belief and my decrepit knees ache on their behalf! Each Olympic event is perfectly timed to synchronise with television schedules – camera work is precise, rehearsed and pushes the boundaries of available technology. For the timekeepers this means that there are no chances to get things wrong, everything is secured, backed-up and backed-up again as athletes and trainers rely on their data for the slightest improvement. Back in our hotel HQ Sam was kept busy compiling edits and pushing out our content to social media and broadcasters. It was a great Games, absolutely bloody freezing, but great. Thanks to all of our friends at Omega who continue to take us with on these great Olympic adventures.
