FILMING YOURSELF AT HOME : DO’S AND DON’TS

FILMING YOURSELF AT HOME DO'S AND DON'TS Like many production companies and those in the creative space we have had to adapt fast to the new working conditions presented by COVID-19. In part technology is helping hugely, had this outbreak occurred just a couple of years ago it would have been an existential struggle to keep projects coming in and turned around. Cloud services like Adobe Creative Suite can be accessed anywhere and as long as the hardware is up to it, there's no reason why editors can't continue to create from the comfort, or confines of their home! Thank the gods of production for fibre broadband, where after years of playing catch up, most of us enjoy reasonable speeds and can up and download without too much delay. Video assets in whatever resolution are the life blood of Quite Frankly and as long as we're not talking terabytes of footage, it's not unreasonable to distribute them around our network. [...]

CREATIVES UNPLUGGED : PAUL REAM, DOP

PAUL REAM DIRECTOR OF PHOTOGRAPHY This week we've got another helping of creative inspiration to throw your way in the form of the latest piece from our Creatives Unplugged series. We sat down with Paul Ream to talk about his craft as a Cameraman/Director of Photography. Paul is most certainly a top talent in this world not least in terms of experience and flair. We consider it a joy and privilege each time we get to work with Paul. So who the heck are you? (Kidding, but for real, what’s your story?) I’ve worked in TV/film since leaving school at 16, (quite some years ago now!). In fact, I knew I wanted to be a TV cameraman from the age of eight when I was given a tour of a TV Studio. From that moment on, I was determined to make sure this would be my career. Being able to express yourself artistically, while telling stories and simultaneously [...]

CREATIVES UNPLUGGED : DAVID ARSHADI, EDITOR

DAVID ARSHADI EDITOR After a bit of a break, we're back with a new series: Creatives Unplugged. It's our aim to give you an inside look at the industry, each piece will be based around a freelance industry professional who will give you a little bit of advice and some helpful insights into doing what they do. This week we've been chatting with David Arshadi, one of the most experienced and talented editors that we've had (and continue to have) the pleasure of working with. What's in your edit 'kit'? In terms of software I like to stay ambidextrous, so I use both Avid and Premiere. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but it allows me to enjoy a varied career (Avid is traditionally used for features and documentaries, Premiere is more geared towards short form). I’m more of a Mac person, but the ludicrous cost is driving me more towards buying a PC for my next [...]

QUITE FRANKLY’S FAVOURITES : SPACES & PLACES

QUITE FRANKLY'S FAVOURITES : SPACES & PLACES Here at Quite Frankly we're all about 'sharing is caring' when it comes to creativity. That means a lot of the time when we're not down a rabbit hole of production, we're nose deep in books, crying in theatres (true story) or bopping along to the latest podcast phenomenon. To further our (and hopefully your) coffee kitchen chats, we've collated a list below of our latest and greatest recommendations. After a bit of a break from the series, we return with the final instalment - the places we've been spending our time in the greatest city on earth. BEATRIZ The ‘W6 Garden Centre and Café’ near Ravenscourt Park "Good coffee, good cake, and lovely people that can help you with your plant needs. Not sure you'll be able to leave without getting at least one adorable tiny cactus." SALLY [...]

QUITE FRANKLY’S FAVOURITES : ENTERTAINMENT

QUITE FRANKLY'S FAVOURITES : ENTERTAINMENT Here at Quite Frankly we're all about 'sharing is caring' when it comes to creativity. After the Easter break, the series returns with what we've been watching! BEATRIZ 'Russian Doll' on Netflix "Powerful female characters, greatly timed comedy, entrancing storytelling... When you think you know what is going to happen... guess again. And again. And again." SALLY 'The Umbrella Academy' on Netflix "Based on a comic I used to like and they have done a good job of bringing to the small screen." [...]

BEATRIZ AMARAL TEIXEIRA AND THE WORLD OF TECH

BEATRIZ AMARAL TEIXEIRA AND THE WORLD OF TECH Who are you? Hi! My name is Beatriz Amaral Teixeira and I’m the Technical Assistant at Quite Frankly. Where do you come from? My name is in fact a dead giveaway that I am not from the UK. Have been asked before if I’m Italian or Spanish, but I am in fact Portuguese from the beautifully sunny city of Lisbon. Proudly born and raised in Lisbon, I have moved my roots all the way to the exquisite, expansive, and ever-changing city of London where I have been for the last 3 years. Three words associated with being a tech assistant? My top three are: readiness, support and efficiency. Readiness has to do with being ready even if you don’t know what you have to be ready for. There’s such a fast rhythm around the office with shoots going on [...]

QUITE FRANKLY’S FAVOURITES : PODCASTS

QUITE FRANKLY'S FAVOURITES : PODCASTS Here at Quite Frankly we're all about 'sharing is caring' when it comes to creativity. This week we're looking at podcasts. CLAIRE 'Desert Island Discs' by BBC Radio 4 "Listening to such a variety of extraordinary people talking about their lives whilst walking into work is the perfect way to start my day." BEATRIZ 'Dead Blondes Series' by You Must Remember This "My oh my, does Hollywood have a thing for blondes! The Marilyn Monroe episodes are very interesting and cover everything from her iconic persona to her personal life and astute [...]

ITS ALL ABOUT MOTION

IT'S ALL ABOUT MOTION GRAPHICS (and rendering) It’s been a few years since we brought our motion graphics artist Ben Emrich into the QF team. He joined us in 2015 and ever since then we’ve seen demand for animated content steadily grow…. and with that, Ben’s workload! Ben and Win off to a busy start Finding the right person to join him and add to the QF skill set took some time but we’re delighted that a few weeks ago, motion graphics artist Winyee Cheung came on board from direct marketing agency MRM//McCann. She had gained some good experience illustrating and animating projects for clients including TUI, Opel and GSK, but decided to make the jump from a larger agency environment to work alongside Ben. Coincidentally, they had completed an Art Foundation Degree at Farnham together prior to university and reconnected after Win applied for the QF role. We [...]

OPENING THE DOORS OF QUITE FRANKLY USA

QUITE FRANKLY PRODUCTIONS USA OPENING THE DOORS OF QF USA It's been a whirlwind first four weeks here in Manhattan since QF USA opened its doors on September 10th. But we're fully up and running and morale is high! As I write, Catherine is wrapping a shoot day at Diageo North America whilst I'm off to the AFAR 2018 Travel Vanguard, celebrating key players in the travel industry and making new connections along the way. I've certainly been rushing around the city since we launched - meeting with agencies, publishers, brands and government entities for presentations and conversations around potential business. When we're not out and about, we are enjoying the new office - located within Hunter PR's space on the corner of Madison Square Park, it's an incredible location. There are some excellent local food spots, if you fancy a visit? The team at Hunter could [...]
